23.

As Marcus and Lilly emerged from the forest and approached Versailles, Lilly suddenly stopped walking and said, “Where is she, Marcus?”

Marcus said, “She’s in bed. She has a terrible headache.”

Lilly said, “Take me to her.”

Marcus and Lilly walked through the gardens, across the marble courtyard and into the palace of Versailles.

Quickly, Marcus led Lilly to Marina’s bedroom.

Lilly put her hand on Marcus’s shoulder and said, “Thank you.”

Marcus kissed Lilly on both cheeks and then walked away, leaving Lilly alone in front of Marina’s bedroom door.

Nervously, slowly, Lilly turned the doorknob, opened the door and then entered the bedroom.

Marina was in bed, asleep. She was naked, covered by a thin blanket.

As Lilly walked into the room, Marina opened her eyes.

Marina’s eyes told Lilly everything she needed to know, and Lilly’s heart sank. It was still Marina. There had been no change.

Lilly said, “Does your head still ache, Marina?”

Marina nodded. “It’s the most horrible pain. Something’s happening in my head. My mind. I feel as though it’s slipping away from me. Everything’s changing. It’s happening so fast. I’m frightened.”

Lilly knelt down next to the bed and took Marina’s hand. “Don’t be afraid.”

Marina looked at Lilly and then touched Lilly’s face.

Lilly knew that Marina was touching her face because Marina was searching for clues.

Slowly, Marina ran her fingers along Lilly’s face. Marina said, “I think…yes…I know you.”

Lilly nodded.

“I mean I knew you. I knew you…before Versailles,” Marina said, slowly.

Lilly said, “That’s right.”

Marina looked away and then shut her eyes. A few seconds later, she opened her eyes and then once again looked at Lilly.

Lilly smiled. There was now a look of recognition in the woman’s eyes, and Lilly knew that the woman who was looking at her was no longer Marina. Marina was gone forever.

Lilly went to the bedroom door and locked it. She then walked back to the bed, bent down, kissed the object of her desire and said, “I can’t believe this is really happening. I feel like I’m still dreaming.”

But Lilly knew that it was not a dream. Lilly knew that it was, finally, real.

Lilly took off her clothes, got into bed and said, “Susan.”
